What is Motability?

The Motability Scheme has helped changed the lives of more than three million disabled people since it was established in 1978 in order to help them to get mobile and enjoy greater independence.

A registered charity, the organisation helps them to spend their government-funded mobility allowance on leasing a new car, scooter or powered wheelchair, and also makes it easier for them to identify and buy the correct, necessary mobility adaptations, supplied by Autochair, for their vehicles.

To qualify, customers must receive the higher Rate Mobility Component of Disability Living Allowance, the Enhanced Rate of the Mobility Component of Personal Independence Payment (PIP), the War Pensioners’ Mobility Supplement (WPMS) or the Armed Forces Independence Payment (AFIP).

The charity currently has 640,000 customers who receive a new car, powered wheelchair or scooter via recommended dealers every three years – or alternatively a wheelchair accessible vehicle every five years – as well as a number of benefits including road tax, servicing and maintenance and full breakdown assistance.
